Empower Filipino Women

Why this is important

The Reproductive Health Law was signed by President Benigno Aquino in December 2012 after a bitter 14-year battle between women’s rights advocates and Catholic bishops. It would fund access to contraceptives for the nation’s poorest women and promote sex education in schools. It does not legalize abortion. The Supreme Court stalled the enactment of the law in March 2013. While it is deliberating, about 15 Filipino women die every day from pregnancy and childbirth. The country's maternal mortality rate is approximately 5,300 maternal deaths per year. The Philippines is the 12th most populated country in the world and has the highest teen birth rate among Southeast Asian countries.
