Thank you Avaaz for enabling 2920 people to speak out loud and clear on behalf of breeding sows in South Africa. We want sow stalls - the metal 'straighjacket' that prevents all movement - banned - for being the cruel confinement that it is. Compassion in World Farming SA will pass on this petition to supermarkets and the South African Pork Producers Organisation.

As of 1st January 2013, keeping pregnant pigs in metal stalls for longer than the first four weeks of pregnancy, was banned throughout the EU. 60 000 pregnant pigs in South Africa are still immobilised in metal stalls! Yet farmers who have taken the big step of keeping them in group housing on deep litter instead, confirm in the latest Farmer's Weekly (January 2013 issue)that stalls weaken the sows' legs, lead to overgrown hooves, increase the risk of urinary tract infections and cause frustration and repetitive behaviour like constant biting of the metal bars.
