To introduce a nationwide Container Deposit Scheme (CDS)

Australians currently consume drinks in close to 13 billion plastic containers each year. Of these containers under 40% are recycled, while the majority are littered or landfilled, representing a huge waste of resources and damaging the environment. If these containers were recycled we could save a significant amount of raw materials, water and energy otherwise used in container production.
This is why Australia needs the effective and proven Container Deposit Scheme. In South Australia, which has Container Deposit Legislation, the plastic bottle recycling rate approximately 75%, which is significantly higher than the rest of the country. Recycling rates in SA prove that CDS is very effective.
This proven effectiveness of CDS is why nationwide 82% of Australians surveyed by Clean Up Australia are in favour of a ten cent deposit and refund scheme.

In addition to saving energy, materials, water and the environment a CDS would also created thousands of new jobs; support charities; and result in hundreds of convenient drop-off centres being established - at no cost to the government.
Plastic pollution is currently a huge problem world wide. "It is estimated that plastic kills up to 1 million sea birds, 100,000 sea mammals and countless fish each year." - http://www.cleanuptheworld.org
With plastic causing so much damage it is essential that the majority of plastic is recycled, unfortunately it's not. "Every year more than 6 million tonnes of rubbish is dumped into the world’s oceans. 80% of this waste is plastic, with an estimated 46,000 pieces of plastic per square mile of ocean." - http://www.cleanup.org.au
By signing this petition you can help establish a proven scheme that will create jobs while helping to ensure that plastic is recycled and kept out of our oceans, rivers and landfill.
