KNOW THE SITUATION:

Holbox Island is located in the protected natural area of “Yum Balam”, in the municipality of Lazaro Cardenas, Quintana Roo. It constitutes an extension of the rainforest and wetland ecosystems from the biosphere reserve “Rio Lagartos”. It has a population of 2000 inhabitants engaged in coastal fisheries and in sustainable tourism, having 42 km long and 2 km wide which offer 36 km of pristine beaches, with White and soft coral sand, mangroves and lagoons; a unique ecosystem.

On June 6th, 1994, by a presidencial decree, the region of Yum Balam was declared a natural protected area, as a matter of natural protected area of Flora and Fauna, being Holbox Island part of the NATURAL PROTECTED AREA.

Holbox Island is part of the Protected Area of Flora and Fauna Yum Balam, which has a territorial extensión of 154.052 hectares and is located in the extreme north of the municipality of Lazaro Cardenas, Quintana Roo. It is vitally important in the climate regulation, the conservation of the hydrological cycles, the fixation of nitrogen, the soil formation, the carbon capture, the erosion control, the biological pest control and the degradation of organic waste.

Holbox Island has various environmental categories, besides being a Natural Protected Area; Ramsar Site (humidities of international significance), Marine Region Priority, Terrestrial Region Priority, Hydrological Region Priority, Mangrove Zone with Biological Priority. Furthermore, it is a very important zone for the nesting of birds (three species are endemics), for the reproduction of specimen like the whale shark and the terns; it is the habitat of the horseshoe crab and it hosts a very important reef.

The conservation of the beauty and of the environmental value of Yum Balam depends, among other things, of the functional continuity of the fragile ecosystems that compose it, such as rainforests, petenes, cenotes and wetlands, according to the Environmental Management Program, which has not being published yet.
