Canadians hit Phones to Stop Trump

*** Voter registration drive focuses on Americans living in Canada before this week’s swing state deadlines ***

On the heels of last night’s presidential debate and the leaked Trump video, dozens of Canadians are expected to join the civic movement Avaaz for a phone bank luncheon urging Americans who live in Canada to stop Trump by registering to vote. This week is the critical registration deadline in the US election for swing states like Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Americans abroad are a massive but historically disengaged voter bloc that reports say could tip this year’s election. And Canada hosts one of the highest concentrations of these critical voters.

Andrew Nazdin, Avaaz Campaigner, who is leading today’s event in Toronto said: “Trump is a global threat, which is why so many members of the Avaaz movement worldwide and here in Canada are uniting to help stop him. Today, our message is to Americans everywhere: visit avaaz.org/globalvote, register to vote, your voice is needed, and the deadline is almost here!”

The phone bank event in Toronto is part of Avaaz’s United to Stop Trump campaign focused on mobilizing Americans abroad. The campaign launched two months ago releasing a new, easy-to-use voter registration tool, and get-out-the-vote events in cities with high concentrations of Americans including Mexico City, London and Vancouver. The group has also been running an online registration ad campaign focused on the top seven countries where Americans abroad live. So far, over 30 million people have been enlisted to share the registration tool with their American friends.

The most common reason Americans abroad fail to vote is because they miss state voting registration deadlines, according to a recent survey by the U.S. Vote Foundation. The tool Avaaz has launched makes it easier than ever to vote by optimising the user experience, and removing unrequired fields and extraneous interfaces. The tool is also optimised for mobile use, and allows users who are too busy to register right away to sign up for reminders that encourage them to complete the process.
