Vestager, don't swallow Monsanto-Bayer seeds!

*Resistance growing to protect consumers, public health and the environment*

Ignoring the warning of several experts and a massive global public movement, the EU Commissioner Margrethe Vestager just approved the second of three major agrochemical company mergers. The decision sets the stage for a major public fight over the proposed union of of Monsanto and Bayer later this year.

More than one million people joined an Avaaz campaign calling on the EU to stop the $100 billion Monsanto-Bayer merger. A huge movement is growing worldwide to fight against the agrochemical mergers as people are deeply concerned about their health, the environment, and the power these companies will have on agricultural policies and regulations.

Avaaz Campaign Director Alice Jay said: “Vestager's approval of these mergers is planting the seeds for a disaster harvest for our public health, our environment, small farmers, and our entire food system. She must now listen to the massive public outcry and stop BaySanto, or the three companies left to rule the global seed and pesticide markets will be a poison-peddling cartel."

If the EU Commission approves the pending Monsanto-Bayer mega merger, only 3 companies will control around 70% of agro-chemicals and 60% of commercial seeds worldwide, creating a major monopoly on seeds and pesticides. Together, Monsanto-Bayer alone would control 29% of the global seed market and 25% of the global pesticide market.
