Statement on Coronavirus debt relief from Gordon Brown, former UK Prime Minister
"Already the African economy is suffering and poverty is rising. African Finance Ministers have told the IMF and World Bank that if the spread of COVID-19 is not contained, their countries are likely to experience 2 - 3% declines in GDP growth rates in 2020, leaving African poverty - already 60 percent of all global poverty - rising at unacceptable rates.
African Finance Ministers recommend the immediate waiver of all interest payments on debt - estimated at US$44 billion for 2020 - with the need for a possible extension to the medium term. But in total, with the debt waiver included, Africa Finance Ministers need immediate resources of $100bn.
The G2O should commit that the World Health Organisation, World Bank, International Monetary Fund and the African Development Bank will offer what Africa needs."
