The Council of Human Rights of the United Nations, the European Commission
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (57 members) requires that blasphemy should be considered as a defamation of religions and should be penally punished. Freedom of expression is one of the fundamental human rights. Freedom of conscience and of expression would be severely endangered by the European and international adoption of such a measure. That would establish a discrimination based on religious and philosophical convictions and would confirm the grave infringements already existing in countries where anything can be labeled « blasphemy » in order to cast people in jail, deprive them of their rights or even murder them. Such a text would be an infrigement upon the freedom of the media, upon artistic and creative freedom, and would drastically endanger the rights of women. The ban should be withdrawn from all constitutions, including the constitutions of countries where it has been imposed by Christian churches.
